Principles of Recovery:
Gulf Coast Recovers for an Efficient, Effective, Equitable Recovery
Hurricane
Katrina August 29, 2005
Values
As the world's population
has become concentrated in cities, the structure and
function of the urban area increasingly determine the health
and wellness of a given community within a "society."
This ecological perspective sees the identified community as
part of a larger whole. Wealth, culture,
race/ethnicity, and other factors, determine the mode of
distribution and flow of resources and opportunities that
stratify communities in a complex matrix created by cities
within a local, national and global urban context.
Vision
We are committed to
protecting the vulnerable community and create a space for
all survivors of the Gulf to recover in an effective,
efficient, and equitable fashion.
Mission
Our mission is to
improve the wellness of the Gulf Coast community through
efforts that respond to the health needs of all people
affected by Hurricane Katrina
1. Creating a space for
ALL displaced people of Hurricane Katrina to recover
effectively.
2. Protecting the
vulnerable communities in the Gulf Coast Region
3. Reconnecting the
social network to promote the "Right to Return" home.
4. Responding to the
health needs of those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
5. Promoting and
improving the overall wellness of individuals, families,
groups and communities of the Gulf Coast affected by
Hurricane Katrina.
"The Right to
Return"
For individuals, groups, and
families, we believe that the "right to return" home
encompasses ensuring that the people of the Gulf Coast will
have their lives brought back to a standard that is
acceptable, be able to reconnect with their families and
their historical ties with the Gulf region.
For the cities and
communities, we believe that the "right to return"
encompasses the reconstruction of the Gulf region by
building structure that work to protect the communities,
preserve culture, decrease disparities, and promote overall
health and wellness of the people in the region.
